The last anniversary dinner I took to was a complete surprise to her. We got all dressed up and jumped in the car. The mood was light. As we traveled East on NY17 Lore attempted and failed repeatedly to guess our dining destination. When we merged onto I88 her mood changed dramatically.

She had no idea where we were going, without any control of the situation and she was not happy. She was surly the rest of the ride to Cooperstown and The Otesaga Hotel. She was surly during one of the finest meals I’ve ever eaten. Her mood darkened as we walked the grounds after dinner and then lectured me for the entire hour ride home.

Power. Control. If she didn’t have it all, she wasn’t happy. This was her definition of a cooperative healthy martial relationship.

Our children follow her example
